Same diagonals as the standard square, far less room to hide them, so the letters press together and the words start overlapping each other.

Crowding is the whole character of this board. When a word slopes across a small field it crosses many others, and shared letters become the rule rather than the exception. A letter you have already used for one answer may well belong to a second as well. Expect to reuse squares constantly.
It suits a player who already knows the format and wants something denser than a beginner grid, without going as far as reversed spelling. On paper it stays legible at a modest size, which helps if you are copying sheets for a group and need the print to stay comfortable to read.
Pick an uncommon letter and work outwards from it. K is a good anchor in this theme — it turns up in the skull, the ankle and the kidney — and from any K you only need to test the forward directions, never the reverse.
