Hard keeps the horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines of the easier levels and opens all four of them in the opposite sense. An answer may run right to left, bottom to top, or up and back along a diagonal. The words themselves have not changed, but your eye has to stop assuming where a word begins.
This theme reads well at hard because so many of its entries share openings. Several begin with the same letter, and the planet names in particular cluster together, which means a promising start often turns out to belong to a different answer entirely. Expect to abandon a few false trails before the board opens up.
Hunt endings as much as beginnings. Several answers here finish with the same two letters, so a stray pair like ET is worth following in every direction before you dismiss it.
