A smaller board sounds easier, and in one sense it is: there is less area to search. But hard rules and a tight grid together mean the answers overlap heavily, and a run of letters can belong to a word going forwards, a word going backwards, or nothing at all. Elimination stops being quick.

It suits someone who already finishes the easier grids without much effort and wants the same theme to put up a fight. The kitchen words stay ordinary throughout, which keeps the difficulty in the hiding rather than in the vocabulary — nothing obscure, nothing you would need to look up.

Use the uncommon letters as anchors. K, W and V turn up in only a few of these words, so when you spot one, check every direction leading away from it before moving on.
