Squeezing a medium list into a smaller square raises the letter density. Words cross each other more often, share cells, and sit close enough that a promising run of letters frequently belongs to more than one answer at once. Nothing is hidden unfairly; there is simply less empty space to rule out at a glance.

The kitchen list adds its own complication, because so many of its words start alike. Spoon, stove, spice and simmer all open the same way, and on a crowded board that overlap sends you down the wrong path more than once. It rewards patience rather than speed, which makes it a satisfying single sitting.

Do not commit to a word on its first letter alone. Check the letters that follow in the same direction first, and you will waste far fewer moves on a board this dense.
