Raptors, songbirds, seabirds and exotic species fly through these grids made for budding bird-watchers.

The words range from species seen at a winter feeder to those you only meet at the zoo or in documentaries. Bird names are rich in sounds, and hunting for their spelling, with double letters and unusual endings, is a good way to remember them.

This birds word search has three levels, easy, medium and hard, with sizes from 8×8 to 20×20. Easy runs words left to right or top to bottom, medium adds diagonals, and hard allows all eight directions, backwards included. Every grid is generated and then checked automatically by software, and each word is placed exactly once.

Suggested school level

Grades 1-4 (ages 6-10): easy 8×8 or 10×10; grades 5-6 move to medium.

Classroom activity idea

Set up a feeder near the classroom window and log the visitors for a few days. Each student then finds the observed names in the grid and sketches the bird beside it. Print different grids for the whole group (1, 5, 10 or 30 copies); the answer key allows fast checking.

Classroom use is allowed: print as many copies as your students need, free of charge, with no sign-up.

Many bird names share endings, so after finding one, scan its surroundings: a similar word often sits right beside it.
