Seasonal Word Searches: Christmas, Valentine's, Easter, Halloween
Five themes tied to the calendar, for the weeks when a whole room is already thinking about the same thing.
Holiday puzzles work because the vocabulary is shared. Children have been talking about costumes, cards or eggs for days before the party, so a grid on that theme needs no introduction, and even a hesitant reader recognizes most of the words as soon as the list is read aloud. Winter fills the gaps between the big dates with snow, cold and cozy things.
The group gives a teacher or an activity leader a theme for almost every month from autumn to spring: Halloween in October, Christmas in December, Valentine's Day in February, Easter in the spring, and winter whenever the cold sets in. All of them are cheerful and secular, and every one comes in several levels and sizes, free to play on screen or to print in black and white.
Print a few weeks ahead of the date. A class set takes minutes to run off, and a ready folder means a holiday never catches you without something for the table.
