A winter word search for the season we know best here: the storm that closes the school, a toque pulled down to the eyebrows, and the warmth waiting at home.

The vocabulary moves from outside to inside: what you pull on to face the cold, schoolyard games, the curiosities of the far north, and the small pleasures of coming home, like a hot drink under a quilt. Along the way you will meet words for weather, ice and icy sidewalks that Canadian students use all season but seldom spell.

This page has three levels, easy, medium and hard, with grids from 8×8 to 20×20. Easy reads left to right and top to bottom, medium adds diagonals, and hard allows backwards words in all eight directions. It is a calm, quiet activity for the return from recess on a stormy day. Every grid is generated, then checked automatically by software, so each word is placed exactly once with no accidental words in the filler.

Suggested school level

Kindergarten to grade 3 (ages 5-9): easy 8×8; grades 3-5 move to medium.

Classroom activity idea

On a snow day, or the morning after one, print different grids using batch printing of 5, 10 or 30 copies. When every word is found, students sort them into four groups: clothing, games, weather, home. Each one then draws a winter scene that includes at least five words from the grid.

Classroom use is allowed: print as many copies as your students need, free of charge, with no sign-up.

Weather words such as BLIZZARD contain rare letters; look for the Z, then follow the line. Clothing words often end in S when plural.
