Large-print word searches for seniors, to print

Eight grids made for comfortable reading: fewer letters, large type and themes that bring back memories.

The downloadable PDF holds eight 12×12 grids with at most 15 words each. Letters in the grid and the list are 18 points or larger, in a typeface designed for readers with low vision, and each sheet fits on one page. Words read left to right and top to bottom, with no diagonals or backwards words, and the answer keys are grouped at the end so the activity leader or caregiver can keep them aside.

The themes were picked for their familiar vocabulary: the sugar shack, Quebec, hockey, a Quebec Christmas, the farm, the kitchen, birds and the weather. In a residence or a day centre, a grid soon becomes something to talk about. For other themes, every theme page also prints at the easy level, and the maker has a large-print option.

Print on slightly heavier paper and hand out a highlighter rather than a pencil: the mark is easier to see and needs less precision.
