A sugar shack word search for maple season, from the first thaw to the big table where everyone eats too much.

Everything is here: what collects the liquid in the woods on those first mild days, when nights still freeze and afternoons thaw, the pans that concentrate it down to liquid gold, and the generous meal served at long tables afterwards. A few words nod to the music in the room and the horse-drawn ride outside, two traditions that make a visit more than a trip for dessert.

This page has three levels, easy, medium and hard, with grids from 8×8 to 20×20. Easy reads left to right and top to bottom, medium adds diagonals, and hard allows backwards words in all eight directions. The longer words are good spelling practice before or after a visit. Every grid is generated, then checked automatically by software, so each word is placed exactly once with no accidental words in the filler.

With the French translation, or a short definition: handy for French immersion or a bilingual class.

Suggested school level

Grades 1-5 (ages 6-11): easy 8×8; grades 4-5 try medium.

Classroom activity idea

Before a class trip to a sugar shack, print different grids using batch printing of 5, 10 or 30 copies. Students search for the words, then tick off the ones they see, hear or taste during the visit. Back in class, each one explains in three sentences the step of the process that surprised them most.

Classroom use is allowed: print as many copies as your students need, free of charge, with no sign-up.

Spot the short, sweet words first, such as TAFFY and SHACK, then use them as landmarks to locate the long ones around them.
