The board is small, the placements are not restrained, and the result is a knot. Words overlap heavily, and a run of letters that looks promising often turns out to be the tail of one answer stitched to the head of another. Backwards entries make that worse, because the same run can be read from either end.
Choose it when you want difficulty without a long commitment: the field is short enough to scan again and again, so the challenge is untangling rather than covering ground. Players who like the hard level but find big sheets tiring usually settle here, and it prints small if you are handing puzzles round a table.
When a promising run dead-ends, read it the other way before giving up: on a crowded board a false start is often a real answer pointing the wrong way.
