From the African savanna to the northern forest, these grids gather the mammals everyone knows on sight, plus a few that make you stop and think.

The word list runs from big cats to marsupials, with plenty of creatures you might meet on a hike or at the zoo. Several names are long and tricky to spell, so a child hunting for a ten-letter word usually remembers it afterwards, which turns the page into a quiet vocabulary lesson.

This one page holds three levels, easy, medium and hard, with sizes from 8×8 to 20×20. Easy hides words left to right and top to bottom only; medium adds diagonals; and the hard animal word search allows all eight directions, backwards included. Every grid is generated and then checked automatically by software, so each word appears exactly once and no stray words sneak into the filler.

With the French translation, or a short definition: handy for French immersion or a bilingual class.

Suggested school level

Grades 1-4 (ages 6-10): easy 8×8 or 10×10; grades 5-6 move to medium, and middle school to hard.

Classroom activity idea

Let each student pick three creatures from the list and write a short fact card: where it lives, what it eats, one surprising trait. Print different grids for the whole class (1, 5, 10 or 30 copies), then swap cards while everyone hunts for a neighbour's words. The answer key makes self-checking easy at the end of the period.

Classroom use is allowed: print as many copies as your students need, free of charge, with no sign-up.

Start with the rare letters such as K or Z: few words contain them, so they work as anchors for finding the rest of the word.
