Hunt down the legends and current stars in a hockey players word search made for fans of every age.

This list gathers names that shaped the NHL, from the old greats to today's stars, with a good share of players who wore the Canadiens sweater. Each name comes with a short description of position, team and claim to fame, so solving the puzzle teaches a little hockey history.

The page has three levels, easy, medium and hard, with grid sizes from 8×8 to 20×20. Easy grids read only left to right and top to bottom; medium adds diagonals, and hard also hides names backwards. Every grid is generated and then checked automatically by software, so each name appears exactly once. It is free, needs no sign-up, and prints with an answer key.

With the French translation, or a short definition: handy for French immersion or a bilingual class.

Suggested school level

Grades 3-6 (ages 8-12): easy 8×8 or 10×10; middle school moves to medium or hard

Classroom activity idea

After the puzzle, each student picks one player and writes a three-line profile: position, team and what made him famous. Post the profiles on a classroom wall to build a small hall of fame. Print different grids for the class in batches of 1, 5, 10 or 30 copies.

Classroom use is allowed: print as many copies as your students need, free of charge, with no sign-up.

Names in the grid have no accents or spaces, so start with the longest surnames or those with unusual letters, like K or Z, which stand out from the filler.
