A winter sports word search for anyone who knows the squeak of cold snow underfoot, from the ski hill to the neighbourhood arena.

The vocabulary falls into three families: the gear you strap on before heading out, the hills and frozen ponds where it all happens, and the events that fill the Winter Olympics. Quebec kids grow up with most of these words, so the puzzle is a friendly way to practise spelling the ones they usually only say out loud.

This page has three levels, easy, medium and hard, with grids from 8×8 to 20×20. Easy reads left to right and top to bottom, medium adds diagonals, and hard allows backwards words in all eight directions. Every grid is generated, then checked automatically by software, so each word is placed exactly once with no accidental words in the filler.

With the French translation, or a short definition: handy for French immersion or a bilingual class.

Suggested school level

Grades 3-8 (ages 8-13): easy 8×8 or 10×10; older students move to medium or hard.

Classroom activity idea

Before a ski trip or an outdoor-ed day, hand each team a different grid using batch printing of 5, 10 or 30 copies. When the words are found, teams sort them into three columns: gear, places, events. Each team then presents its favourite winter sport in one complete sentence.

Classroom use is allowed: print as many copies as your students need, free of charge, with no sign-up.

Multi-word events are written as one long word with no spaces or hyphens, so hunt for the opening letters, such as SKI or ICE, then follow the line to the end.
