A walk through the woods in grid form, with northern trees, forest animals and everything you meet along a trail.

This forest word search leans on the woodlands of northern North America: conifers, broadleaf trees, undergrowth plants and the furry or feathered residents that hide among them. Students learn to tell trees apart, name their parts and recognise wildlife. It is also a nice way to prepare for, or follow up, an outdoor field trip.

The page offers three levels, easy, medium and hard, with grids from 8×8 to 20×20. On easy, words read left to right and top to bottom; medium adds diagonals; hard uses all eight directions, backwards included. Each grid is generated, then checked automatically by software, and is free, printable and comes with an answer key.

With the French translation, or a short definition: handy for French immersion or a bilingual class.

Suggested school level

Grades 3-7 (ages 8-12): easy 10×10 or medium 12×12; older students try hard.

Classroom activity idea

After the grid, take the class to the schoolyard or a nearby park with the printed list. Students tick every word they can actually observe. Back in class, each student sketches a leaf and writes the names of the trees they managed to recognise.

Classroom use is allowed: print as many copies as your students need, free of charge, with no sign-up.

Tree and animal names often share endings and short letter pairs, so scan for a distinctive letter such as the K of a bark word or the W of a wolf, then test the directions around it.
